A Following

on 1.5” gallery wrapped canvas
Everyday they swim across the window ledge over the sink in my kitchen. They were passed down from my mother. A crystal and sterling silver following, meant for the table. The mother swan for sugar, the little ones for salt and pepper.
They were a part of my childhood and mother’s dining room china cabinet.
In “A Following”, the swans are collage pieces taken from acrylic paper palettes that left their splashes of dried color. The color gradations made well for movement of light reflected from their feathers. The lace taken from a lace table cloth that would be where mother would have placed this following when guests came for dinner. The lace translated movement of water and represented times in my childhood and characteristics of mother. To the left side are calligraphy practice parchment sheets of mine. They spoke to me of the message mother lived. A delicate, uncomplicated soul that put others first and lead by an example of love.
