This is an original watercolor painting of the steeple on the southeast corner of Georgia Avenue and McCallie Avenue in Chattanooga, Tennessee. It is the featured portion of the remaining structure from the First Methodist Episcopal Church, also known as the “Stone Church”. 

  • History

    The church was built between 1881 and 1885. The church's first sermon was preached on May 24, 1885.and was demolished in 1977. The congregation merged with Centenary Methodist in 1967 to form First Centenary United Methodist Church. 

  • Steeple

    The steeple was saved from the church by Chattanooga industrialist Gordon Street, who paid to preserve it after the church was demolished.The steeple was originally covered with Victorian-era slate tiles, but the wind and weather damaged them, and they were replaced with new tiles.
